The Defender distribution system focuses on zip codes with the highest Black household incomes. To connect with Blacks in suburban areas, The Defender placed emphasis on distribution in major traffic areas. Today, The Defender is the only African-American newspaper distributed in major retail/grocery stores such as: Kroger’s, Randall’s, HEB, Fiesta, Gerlands, Sears, etc. In addition, The Defender targets churches with over 5,000 members and community outlets with patrons that fit our demographic target.

The Defender is audited by Certified Audit Circulation (CAC). In addition, The Defender is also audited by Media Audit, a division of International Demographics, which provides demographics, buying patterns and industry information related to our readers. Based on our 2008 audit The Defender boasts 60,000 readers.
